#SKIPTHESTRAW

For those of you who do not know, the fourth Friday in February of every year is National Skip the Straw Day. This day was created because of the huge negative effect that straws have had on the ocean and the animals that live in the ocean. The sea currents create vortexes trapping plastics, and amongst this collection are plastic drinking straws. These plastic straws and other plastics cause detrimental harm to marine life in more ways than one. The plastic is consumed accidentally by birds, fish and other sea life when they mistake it for food.

 The Damage Caused by Straws

Unfortunately for these animals, plastics do not biodegrade. Instead they break down into smaller and finer microscopic pieces. Along with the breakdown comes bisphenol, which is a BPA that interferes with reproductive systems in the marine life, and that’s not it. Bisphenol also produces styrene monomer which is a suspected carcinogen.

 How can you help?

There are plenty of eco-friendly ways to sip your drink without using a traditional plastic straw.

-       Bamboo straws, these are renewable, reusable and biodegradable

-       Paper straws, biodegradable and from a renewable source

-       Glass straws, durable, colourful designs

-       Stainless steel straws, for those who like their cold drinks really cold

Other ways to help:

-       Volunteer to help clean up your local beaches, parks or neighbourhoods

-       Plan ahead, be prepared to order your drink without a straw, request no straw

-       Spread the word on social media use the hashtag #skipthestraw

GAIA

We here at GAIA encourage our guests to join the movement and skip the straw, say no to sippin’ and strrin’. As a kind reminder to break the habit which comes so naturally, we have signs placed in our restaurant and bars.

You don’t have to wait until the fourth Friday in February to make a difference, start making a difference now! The next time you order a drink be sure to ask for your drink strawless.
